With each purchase you make, you are helping these women

take a step out of poverty towards more education, decent wages, and a healthier life.

How you ask? By Indego Africa's fair trade process.

Women lovingly create these items, and then we bring them to the U.S.

and sell them at fair prices. The profits go right back to

helping these women by providing long-term training programs.

Indego Africa currently partners with twelve artisan co-ops of women in Rwanda. The co-ops are independent, for-profit businesses that consist of more than 400 remarkable women, many of whom cope with HIV/AIDS; suffer from psychological trauma; have little formal education; care for several children, including orphans from the 1994 Genocide; and are the sole provider in their household. Before partnering with Indego, 93% of the women earned less than 550 RwF (US$1.00) per day — typically by carrying water on an unreliable basis.

Indego's work has been recognized by the likes of Harvard Business School, Goldman Sachs 10,000 Women Program, and iconic fashion designer Nicole Miller. Our corporate and nonprofit partners include Generation Rwanda, Vision Spring, Amazon, Anthropologie and many more. (And yes, we'd love to add your name to the list.

A fews weekends ago, we happened upon Ocean Beach which I find to be ridiculously dramatic--for the tide, the cliffs and, the typically, very foggy weather.

And this day, lived up to expectation. But the little ones still threw themselves into the surf, clothes and all, just like any other day at the sea. And as they swam, the most remarkable bit of art was being created behind them, just to the reaches of the tide.

Andres Amador, an artist known for his impermanent sand designs, which can cover enormous swatches of beach, was creating a marriage proposal request in the sand below the cliffs. It was amazing to watch him, so calmly sculpt the sand, with his rake, as the tide skimmed right up to the edges. A few times, the tide would erase a piece here and there, only to have Andres re-sculpt the edge.

I felt like we had been privy to one of nature's magical creations. And also part of some couple's very romantic afternoon.

Thanks Andres, it was lovely to see. Hope you all enjoy something magical this weekend, too.

lived up to my expectations.

Our booth was packed with sweet new styles; classic pieces that we can't yet retire; beautiful, sweet props and
a new face--Anna-Lisa Froman.

Banana Republic, Baby Gap & Marco Bicego, we are thrilled to have Anna-Lisa's contribution.

She possesses a wealth of experience with department & speciality stores, as well as a keen strategic mind. She is supremely smart, outrageously funny & incredibly elegant--which is not lost

on our tiny chic sensibilities!

We met with loads of stores--big, small, new & old. We put together stories for each that expressed ses petites mains' spring 2012 Garden Party collection in the best light for each store's unique flavor.

Today was a most inspired day. I, as the owner of ses petites mains,

was invited to take part in a roundtable discussion with

Leader Nancy Pelosi.

Sitting around the table with twelve other small business owners,

all incredibly varied in their mission, I shared my experience of manufacturing apparel in San Francisco--the rewards & the challenges, for which there are many.

With the incredible variety of businesses involved, I was struck by the similarity of issues in running a small business in this current, economic environment. Issues related to obtaining credit; having the ability to hire; maintaining and growing a client base were repeated themes.

And as we each spoke and shared our experiences, it was with enormous care and attention that Leader Pelosi documented the details and then spoke to our specific concerns. I left the meeting with a tremendously optimistic feeling--that our government is truly working to understand the issues involved in al of our struggles and, in full support of small business.

I look forward to further discussions about how small business can gain access to capital; increase their hiring opportunties and in so, help to drive our economy in the right direction.

Again, I thank the tremendously supportive

I've gathered my thoughts on all things related to small business--

the biggest issues facing the small business community &

highlighted my ideas on how to

promote new jobs and increase innovation.

I'm honored, and nervous and really needing to get ready...

Last weekend, an unexpected trip left me with little time to plan-- I raced to the airport, grabbed the latest issue of Vogue, a fresh cup of coffee and claimed my seat. In the 40 minutes it took to reach my destination, I found these inspiring pieces.

PCV's Small Business Showcase

Feeling 'watched over' by the art

Today, I had the pleasure of exhibiting at

Pacific Community Venture's Annual Small Business Showcase, at UCSF's Mission Bay Conference Center.

We packed up our dress form--sweetly adorned in one of our 'best sellers'. We took lookbooks of upcoming, present & past collections; pressbooks; and tons of our photography to help give a taste of what it is we do at ses petites mains.

We also didn't forget to pack a tiny chic package that we presented to California's Lieutenant Governor, and San Francisco's recent Mayor, Gavin Newsom. He enthusiastically accepted and ensured us that his nearly 2 year-old daughter will happily wear it to one of their many 'social engagements'.

A day like today, makes me feel so proud that we have five years of tiny chic clothing to share. And that we work, against many odds, to continue to support our local community and produce our collection--every last style--right here, in San Francisco.

As we navigate through our Spring2012 selling season, I'm so encouraged and feel so supported by the business community around ses petites mains. I extend a special thanks to Kendra Ott and Chase Adam--both of PCV--for their help & attention.

took a bunch of candid family photos.

Just happened to have on the dress of my dreams, that day too.

back-to-school

The phrase 'back-to-school' is not making me think of pleated skirts, new pencils and fresh gum erasers. Nor is my business mind prompted to create a promotion to help little girls look as chic as they can, as they embark on their new school year adventure--hand clenched tight to their parent's for as long as they can.

Tonight, back-to-school is much more personal, and bittersweet.

Back-to-school in our house means my daughter will be starting the 4th grade tomorrow. Fast asleep now, but earlier, so excited (or was it nervous?) about all that would happen tomorrow. Outfit layed out; folders & binders on the table; new lunchbox awaiting her favorite tamale lunch. "Will you wake me up at 6?" she asked. Really? I guess she is excited.

I can't believe how the summer break has come and gone. Full of lovely memories, really lovely. But behind us, none the less. Never have I been so aware of the passing of time as I have since she was born. And as I think back on our summer, I'm struck by how she will never be nine again. Even as I know that next summer, I too will be a year older, there is something about the distinct difference in who she has become--each summer--that takes my breath away. This summer, she wanted to learn to surf, so surf we did and you should see her now.

As we leave this summer behind, I find myself taking pause to imagine who she will be next summer. I look forward to where this year will take us; but I'll try to stay present and enjoy all the time in between now and then. Next summer, after all, will be here soon enough!

I know that I have mentioned before, how much I appreciate

the aspect of my work that allows me to meet the

(bespoke--the term historically was applied only to tailored clothing,

and other parts of apparel involving fabric, measurement and fitting.)

My daughter is a bit obsessed with the making, throwing, & freezing of water balloons. On her most recent experiment, she opted to use the long, thin balloons, more commonly used for balloon animals,

or so I'm told.

With the bathroom nearly flooded and broken bits of colorful balloon ties scattered across the house & garden, I must say the resulting smiles & cheers made it all worthwhile.

Living in San Francisco, one can quickly get used to the idea of natural beauty lurking behind every corner--the Headlands, Golden Gate Park, Chrissy Field, Ocean Beach.

But it doesn't end there. We have the added benefit of works of art being 'planted' within our own beautiful, natural landscapes. Take, for example, the Spire, created by
the insanely talented, Andy Goldsworthy.

Atop a hill in the Presidio, Andy Goldsworthy installed this 100 foot-tall work--created by assembling 37 Cypress trunks, held together with steel, that somehow is completely hidden within the sculpture.

As I peered into the Spire, trying see what was at the center, I was struck by the closeness and order of the trunks, and how they really did seem to merge into one.

And when I stood back and took in the Spire's height, I was overwhelmed by the grandeur of it.

And similar to a cathedral, as it reached for the heavens, I stood in quiet contemplation and admired the work, within the setting of the gorgeous outdoor space of the Presidio.

Thank you Mr. Goldsworthy, for yet another inspiring sight to see, in San Francisco.
